Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian is part of the 2018 Brugge Triennale. One of Monir's unrealized projects, Khayyam Fountain, comes to life on the occasion of the triennial and will be installed in the historical center of the city.

Named after Persian poet, astronomer and mathematician Omar Khayyam, the large-scale installation comprises of geometrical patterns piled up as multilayer volumes to form a glass fountain. Inspired by patterns from the mystical Sufism, the tower's three-, four- and even eight- or nine-sided shapes are alternately twisted and cut out into a hollow sculptural installation that reflects ideas and dreams about a new society. Khayyam Fountain combines almost all the geometrical forms Monir has worked with throughout her fifty year career - from Triangle to Nonagon.

In addition to Khayyam Fountain, several earlier works by Monir will also be exhibited at The Poortersloge, one of Brugge’s historical centre buildings.

The Brugge Triennial invited international artists and architects to think about the consequences of today's liquid society. Many of them sought inspiration for their work in the role of liquidity in the city that is literally criss-crossed and surrounded by water. The waterways that once earned Bruges its international renown, become a metaphor for Liquid City and the works installed are answers proposed to the question of what the future holds for ways of thinking and forms of life. The Brugge Triennale is curated by Till-Holger Borchert and Michel Dewilde.

Mirror Variations: The Art of Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian

Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian also features in Mirror Variations: The Art of Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, a solo exhibition at Grand Rapids Art Museum opening May 18.

Large sculptural reliefs with surfaces of cut mirror mosaic and reverse-glass painting form the core of Mirror Variations: The Art of Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian. Works in the Convertible Series are multipart reliefs comprised of nearly-identical, interlocking elements which can be exhibited in a variety of configurations, each designed by the artist. Based on an ancient honeycomb dome design, the work Untitled (Muqarnas) unfolds like symmetrical mirrored wings. The exhibition also includes drawings featuring complex geometric motifs in jewel-tone colors.

Monir's exhibition is concurrent with another solo show by Anila Quayyum Agha, both of whom create works that synthesize Islamic tradition and modern abstraction into objects of great beauty and depth.
