ARTiculations: Talk With Hanieh Delecroix
Thursday, 23 Feb 2017
Doors Open 6:30 PM. Starts 6:45 PM

As part of the Arts & Learning theme of subcultures for 2017, we are proud to be exhibiting a selection of works on paper by Paris-based artist and clinician Hanieh Delecroix from January – February 2017 in the Asia House reception area. Delecroix will discuss her work in more detail at a talk on 23 February in conversation with Pamela Kember, Head of Arts and Learning.

Delecroix’s work focuses on the relationship between the mind and the body with the mind of a damaged body being central to her work. Shades of black and blue dominate her paintings, particularly intense hues of cobalt, ultramarine, and cerulean, which she usually applies with a palette knife in sweeping strokes, creating abstract forms that look ‘written’.

She favours translucent paper, chosen for its fragility and its symbolic, skin-like quality explaining that “a crack in the paint or a tear in the paper becomes like a scar.” Delecroix focuses on the importance of the relationship between mother and child in the context of culture being learned from infancy. Delecroix explores how the legacy of culture is a key factor in helping human societies survive both shifting political and natural environments.
