Over his forty-year career Valamanesh has been awarded several grants, prizes and residencies from institutions around the world. These include the Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship (2014); the artist-in-residence programmes at the Turner Galleries and Central TAFE, Perth (2008); Aomori Contemporary Art Centre, Japan (2006); The Australian National University School of Art, Canberra (2006); Sydney Grammar School, Sydney (2005); Stein am Rhein, Switzerland (2001); School of Art, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand (2000); Asia-link at the National College of Arts, Lahore, Pakistan (2000); the Visual Arts/Crafts Board Fellowship at the Kunstlerhaus, Bethanien, Berlin (1991) and the Perth Praxis, Perth (1981). He also won the Grand Prize at the Dhaka Biennale, Bangladesh (1998); a fellowship from the Australia Council (1998); and a grant from the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council (1982).
Valamanesh has worked on a wide variety of special commissions at home and abroad. These include collaborations with his wife, the ceramicist Angela Valamanesh, on “Gingko Gate Botanic Gardens”, Adelaide (2011); “14 Pieces”, for the North Terrace, Adelaide (2005); and “An Gorta Mor: Memorial to the Great Irish Famine” at the Hyde Park Barracks, Sydney (1999). He also designed the sets for “When the Rain Stops Falling”, Brink Productions, Adelaide Festival (2008); and created “You Just Sit Here, I Will Keep My Eyes Open”, for the FARET Tachikawa Project, Tokyo (1994) and “Knocking from the Inside” at the ASER Complex, Adelaide (1989).
Works by Valamanesh feature in numerous national and international private and public institutions, a small selection of which includes the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth; National Portrait Gallery, Canberra; Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane; Sara Hilden Art Museum, Tampere, Finland; the Museum of New Zealand-Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington; and the Kadist Art Foundation, Paris.
Valamanesh also featured in the recent book, Heartland: contemporary art from South Australia, by Nici Cumpston and Lisa Slade (Thames & Hudson, 2013) and the recent series on Australian art, "The Art of Australia", presented by Edmund Capon (October 2013, ABC Arts Television).
