This year, Rose Issa Projects is participating in Art Dubai and the Bastakiyya Art Fair for the first time. We will be showcasing a selection of works by four outstanding artists from Iran, who have never been seen in Dubai or the Gulf before.
In Farhad Ahrarnia’s “Miss Iraq” series, stitched digital images of Miss USA contestants are superimposed on the map of Iraq, the beauty queens’ features blending with the names of cities now tragically associated with occupation and destruction.
With outstanding technique and subversive humour, Parastou Forouhar’s laminated digital drawings on aluminium comment on gender issues in the Muslim world.
Architect-turned-artist Bita Ghezelayagh’s sculptural felt pieces, embroidered with tulips and covered in talismans of guns, carry inscriptions of slogans from the streets of Tehran: “Are Bullets the answer to Flowers?”
In Taraneh Hemami’s "Heroes, Martyrs and Legends" series, beaded portraits of students who died before and after the Islamic revolution of 1979 reflect how such work is sadly still relevant today.
These four Iranian artists explore their heritage with unforgettable resilience, courage, humour and beauty. Learn more at the talks chaired by Rose Issa every morning at Bastakiya, from 10.30am on the 18th, 19th and 20th March.
